French defense is one of the best defense for black. It is played with the moves 1.e6 for black. The Advance Variation allows black to expand and attack quickly from the queen side but gives white a chance to expand on the king side. But the position that black gets is quite solid.
If you are a 1200-1300 rated player online, I should recommend french defense for black. There are many variations to it that many players at your level might not know how to play against french defense.
